Dunya signs up for quartet in Turkey
(25 February 2005 / Trade Winds)
Dunya Denizcilik of Istanbul has quietly gone ahead with orders for four 17,000-dwt chemical/oil tankers at Turkish shipyards but the company is staying silent on what the move heralds.
The Turkish owner has booked two units at Tuzla Shipbuilding Industry (Tuzla Gemi) and two at the Yardimci group’s Turkter
Shipyard. All four are set for delivery in 2006. No prices have been revealed.
Dunya founder and president Suay Umut did not respond to requests for further information.
The move is a departure for internationally orientated Dunya, which currently operates three 47,000-dwt products tankers and has a further eight similar-size vessels on order at Korean yards. Four are booked at Hyundai Mipo and four at STX Shipbuilding.
Both series have delivery dates starting from November 2006.
One of Dunya’s existing vessels, the Golkoy (built 2000), is said to have been sold to Mercator of India for $40m in November
for delivery soon.
In January, Dunya entered a long-term agreement with Brostrom to place all of its products tankers in Brostrom’s commercial fleet. The Gonen (built 2000) has been part of the Brostrom fleet since 2003, while the Ganmur (built 2001) will join after the completion of its current charter in September 2006.
